The project

ASFINAG – Major refurbishment of the A 23

The main works for the general overhaul of the nearly three-kilometre-long section of the St. Marx elevated road took about three years and were completed in November 2022 and February 2023 respectively.

The heart of this never-opened junction was a 550-tonne bridge over the expressway. For this, ASFINAG deployed one of Europe's largest crawler cranes and lifted the bridge out in one piece. We were allowed to extensively document this extraordinary step with our time-lapse cameras, film cameras and drones.

For these measures, the A 23 between the Gürtel and the Verteilerkreis was completely closed to traffic for the first time for several hours. This made it possible to document the crucial construction phases under exceptional conditions by day and night.
